Living life on life’s terms.
When we’re stressed out, overbooked and overlooked, sometimes we fly on autopilot. But where is that autopilot headed to? Ask yourself what you mindlessly reach for during your moments of hardship. In our society people reach for junk food, sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and illicit drugs, prescription drugs, sex, gambling, shopping, or violence. The options are seemingly limitless, we can stare at the TV for hours at a time, lose ourselves in a romance novel, we can go online and do any number of things, without ever risking a conscious moment. It appears that the overwhelming message being sent to us by the media and our opinion makers is that its unacceptable to experience pain. I challenge you to step outside this box for a few moments. Consider instead that you are fully capable of handling any and all emotions that come your way, without self-medicating with the above-mentioned poisons.

For thousands of people, their autopilot has led to addiction, chronic and fatal medical conditions, loneliness and isolation, and an overall state of despair. Naturally, during times of high stress, such as being experienced globally at this time, our tendency to self-medicate skyrockets. So I ask you to keep a diary for just one week, and write in it briefly three times a day, noting your feelings and how you are coping, or not, with them. You’ll learn more about your unique autopilot and may be even its course will become transparent to you. You are the captain of your ship, whether you like it or not, do not abdicate that honorable position. Search out human contact, the magic of one person connecting with another is without parallel. Do not despair—you are not alone.
